Understanding nd:yag laser
Wavelength determines what a laser reaches and what it spares. The Nd:YAG's longer wavelength travels deeper and interacts less with epidermal melanin, which is why it features prominently in treating Indian and other deeper skin tones.
The same platform is used for different purposes: low-fluence toning for pigmentation, vascular settings for certain superficial vessels, and longer-pulse settings for hair reduction.
As with every device here, the setting follows the diagnosis. The consultation determines whether Nd:YAG is the right tool at all.
This may suit you if
- Selected pigmentation in deeper skin tones
- Certain superficial vascular lesions
- Laser hair reduction, particularly in darker skin
What happens at the clinic
- 1
Indication and settings
The target is confirmed and parameters chosen accordingly; a test patch is used where appropriate.
- 2
Protection
Eye protection is worn throughout, and cooling is applied during treatment.
- 3
Treatment
Pulses are delivered over the target area. Sensation varies with the indication and settings used.
- 4
Aftercare
Soothing care and sun protection are applied, with specific aftercare given for the indication treated.
Aftercare
- Daily sun protection on treated areas
- Avoid heat exposure, sauna and strenuous exercise for 24 hours
- Do not pick any crusts that form
- Follow the indication-specific instructions provided
Possible side effects
- Redness, swelling or transient bruising
- Pigment changes, less likely than with shorter wavelengths but still possible
- Rarely, blistering with inappropriate settings
