Understanding underarm laser hair reduction
Underarm hair is usually coarse and dark, which makes it one of the better responding areas. The skin here is also prone to friction-related darkening, which often improves once shaving and waxing reduce.
Deodorant, recent waxing and any active irritation are checked before treatment, because treating inflamed skin increases the risk of pigmentation.
Underarms are commonly combined with other areas in the same appointment, as the session itself is brief.
This may suit you if
- Frequent underarm shaving or waxing
- Ingrown hairs, folliculitis or razor irritation
- Darkening of the underarm from repeated hair removal
What happens at the clinic
- 1
Skin check
The area is checked for irritation, recent waxing and any active infection before treatment.
- 2
Shave and prepare
The area is shaved and cleaned; deodorant is removed before the session.
- 3
Treatment
Laser passes are made with cooling. The session usually takes only a few minutes.
- 4
Aftercare
Soothing care is applied and you are advised to avoid deodorant for the rest of the day.
Aftercare
- Avoid sun exposure and use sunscreen on treated areas
- No waxing, threading or plucking between sessions — shave instead
- Skip sauna, steam, swimming and hot baths for 48 hours
- Avoid scrubs, retinoids and perfumed products on treated skin for a few days
- Avoid deodorant and antiperspirant for 24 hours after the session
Possible side effects
- Redness and mild swelling around follicles for a few hours
- Temporary darkening or lightening of the skin, more likely in deeper skin tones
- Rare blistering or burns if settings or aftercare are inappropriate
- Incomplete reduction where hair is light, fine or hormonally driven
