Understanding blackheads & whiteheads removal
A blackhead is an open clogged pore whose surface has oxidised and darkened; a whitehead is the same blockage under a closed surface. Both are early acne lesions, which is why treating them properly matters — squeezing them at home is the fastest route to inflammation, marks and scarring.
In the clinic, extraction is done with a sterile comedone extractor after the skin is cleansed and, where useful, softened with a keratolytic agent or a light peel. The procedure is quick and well tolerated, and the skin is calmed afterwards.
Extraction clears what is already there. Preventing the next batch needs a topical retinoid or similar agent, a non-comedogenic routine and, for oily skin, a regular peel schedule. That prevention plan is part of the same appointment.
This may suit you if
- Visible blackheads on the nose, chin and cheeks
- Closed whiteheads across the forehead or jaw
- Congested, rough-feeling skin with enlarged pores
- Anyone tempted to squeeze at home and worried about marks
What happens at the clinic
- 1
Skin preparation
The face is cleansed and, where appropriate, a softening agent or mild peel is applied so that lesions release with less pressure.
- 2
Sterile extraction
Comedones are removed using a sterile extractor under good lighting and magnification, with single-use materials.
- 3
Calming and protection
A soothing application and sunscreen finish the session; the skin may look slightly pink for a few hours.
- 4
Prevention routine
You leave with a prescribed routine aimed at slowing new comedone formation, and a timeline for the next session if one is needed.
Aftercare
- Avoid touching or picking the treated areas
- Skip makeup for the rest of the day where possible
- Use the prescribed routine consistently — extraction alone does not prevent recurrence
- Use sunscreen daily
Possible side effects
- Temporary redness or small crusts at extraction sites
- Post-inflammatory pigmentation if lesions were inflamed
- Recurrence if the preventive routine is not followed
